SPECIFICS OF THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE, MAJOR IN NURSING

Minimum Total Hours: 124

Total Liberal Arts Hours Required: 62

General Education Requirements: 
Per the Core Curriculum Requirements List (see General Education Council),
Students must take PSYC 1010 for the behavioral science requirement, SOCS 1010 for the history, economics, or social sciences elective, MATH 2400 for the mathematics requirement, and lab science requirements are met through the major. Exceptions: only one fine arts course is required.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum GPA of 2.75 in science courses, NRSG courses, and overall for uninterrupted progression in the Nursing major;
  • Minimum grade of C in BIOL 2010, BIOL 2010 lab, BIOL 2020, BIOL 2020 lab;
  • No grade less than C- in PSYC 2010 and the remaining prerequisite courses required for the major;
  • Please note that students may only retake a course one time to meet the GPA and progression requirements;
  • No more than two courses may be retaken in the nursing major, including the sciences, to raise the GPA to meet the requirements to remain in the program.

Once students enter nursing courses:

    • Students must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.75 in NRSG courses and a minimum overall GPA of 2.75 to remain in the major;
    • Students must have an overall GPA of 2.75 and a major GPA of 2.75 to graduate;
    • Students must achieve a minimum grade of C in all NRSG courses;
    • Students must achieve an exam average of 75% or better to successfully complete 3000-level and 4000-level NRSG courses and progress in the major;
    • Students must demonstrate additional competencies before entering clinical courses and throughout the nursing program (e.g., Mathematics*).

Transfer Student Requirements: Transfer students seeking junior year status should obtain information about the summer transfer program (NRSG 2500 and 3400 are offered during summer sessions). Admission is on a space-available basis. To be eligible for this program, the transfer student must:

  • Have completed the Nutrition, Developmental Psychology, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Anatomy and Physiology requirements;
  • Must meet a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and a 3.0 Science GPA in their four science courses to be eligible for acceptance into the Nursing program;
  • Demonstrate additional competencies before admission to the major (e.g., Mathematics).

Technical Standard Requirements: The faculty provides the following policy and procedure to identify the skills required to complete baccalaureate preparation for the practice of Nursing. All individuals who study in the pre-licensure Nursing program at Roberts Wesleyan University must meet academic and technical standards, with or without reasonable accommodations, to progress in and complete the Nursing program. While it is understood that student nurses continually develop their abilities, these standards are essential to the student's success. For more information, see the policy.

Major Requirements: 79 hours, including 60 hours of required nursing courses

  • Two sophomore-level nursing courses: NRSG 2200, 2500**;
  • Nine junior-level nursing courses: NRSG 3200, 3300, 3400, 3450, 3600, 3650, 3800, 3850, 3900;
  • Six senior-level nursing courses: NRSG 4400, 4500, 4600, 4650, 4700, 4750;
  • Developmental Psychology (across the lifespan): PSYC 2010;
  • Science courses are as follows: BIOL 2010, 2010 lab, 2020, 2020 lab, 3010, 3010 lab, CHEM 1140.

Exams in junior and senior-level nursing courses are modeled similarly to the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to prepare students for licensure. Students receive clinical instruction throughout their junior and senior years. Numerous Rochester-area community agencies serve as clinical placements for education directed by the University nursing faculty. Please see the Nursing Student Handbook for additional information.

As an integral part of the University, the four-year academic course offers a program of liberal and professional studies. Students who complete the traditional undergraduate program in Nursing are eligible to take the NCLEX for registered nurse licensure. Upon graduation, students can apply for nursing positions in many settings. They are qualified to enroll in an advanced program in Nursing to prepare for roles such as clinical specialists, nurse practitioners, nurse educators, or administrators.

In addition to the policies, procedures, and guidelines of Roberts Wesleyan University, graduate nursing students follow the policies, procedures, and guidelines of their respective School of Nursing handbook, including clinical compliance requirements and technical standards.

* Passing the math competency may be required to successfully complete some introductory courses.
