Types of Federal Student Aid
- Grants: Financial aid that generally does not need to be repaid.
- Work Study: Opportunities to earn money while attending school.
- Loans: Borrowed educational funds that must be repaid with interest.
Grants
Grants are financial aid that usually doesn't need to be repaid. There are three types:
Pell Grant
For the 2024-2025 school year, eligible students can receive up to $7,395.
The amount may be pro-rated based on the students’ eligibility and enrollment.
Undergraduate students can receive up to 12 semesters (600%).
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
Awarded through us to students with exceptional financial need. This is subject to availability of funds.
An undergraduate student must have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) low enough to receive a Federal Pell Grant in order to be eligible for a Federal SEOG.
Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH)
Up to $4,000 per year for undergraduate and graduate students who are taking or will be taking course work necessary to become an elementary or secondary teacher.
Does not have to be repaid unless you fail to carry out the service obligation, in which case you must repay as a Direct Unsubsidized loan with interest accrued from the date the grant was disbursed.
You must complete TEACH Grant Initial and Subsequent Counseling and a new ATS each year that you receive a TEACH Grant.
Work Study
Federal College Work Study (CWS) provides jobs for enrolled students with financial need who have completed the FAFSA.
Most Federal CWS jobs pay minimum wage. However, employment on campus and hours worked cannot be guaranteed.
Loans
Loan funds are sent to Roberts and applied to your student account.
If borrowing, you must complete a Master Promissory Note for all loans. If you're a student borrowing, you must also complete the Loan Entrance Counseling.

- $31,000 for dependent students (up to $23,000 subsidized)
- $57,500 for independent students (up to $23,000 subsidized)
Subsidized Loans
These are need-based. Apply for these by filling out the FAFSA.
Unsubsidized Loans
This is not need-based, but there is a max amount you can take out every year. You can apply for this by filling out the FAFSA.
- Freshman year: $5,500 ($3,500 Max Subsidized)
- Sophomore year: $6,500 ($4,500 Max Subsidized)

STATE AID
New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)
TAP is a grant for undergraduate students who are permanent New York State (NYS) residents and meet eligibility criteria.
NYS residents can receive up to 4 years (8 semesters) of TAP for full-time study. Under certain conditions, part-time students may be eligible for a limited amount of TAP.
Students from Delaware, Rhode Island, and Vermont may qualify for home state aid when attending a college in New York. Contact your state’s agencies for details.

PRIVATE LOANS
After exhausting other financial resources, students and families may apply for a private (alternative) loan through a lender of their choice. These loans typically require a creditworthy cosigner and may have fixed or variable rates. The interest rate depends on the lender and credit score.
Students can borrow up to the cost of attendance minus financial aid, as determined by Roberts Wesleyan University. All loans must be certified by the Office of Financial Aid.
FASTChoice
While you can borrow from any lender, Roberts Wesleyan University partners with FASTChoice through Great Lakes to simplify the process. FASTChoice offers loan options from lenders our students have used, providing excellent service.
